Wolf Boy iPhone Review
Wolf Boy is a 2-D side scrolling beat-em-up starring Toto, a pint-sized hero who transforms into a werewolf during the full moon. Both attractive and challenging, you'll certainly get your dollar's worth. Just don't expect anything particularly sophisticated.
In the game, Toto sets off to rescue his girlfriend from Monk, a large monkey. To do this, he (more like you) must survive the Forest of Demons, a place teeming with flying primates, angry tomatoes (at least they appear to be tomatoes) and other creatures.
Fortunately, Toto can make short work of his foes with a few punches. The real fun, though, occurs during the full moon, which fill with power the more enemies you destroy. Once that sucker glows, tapping it causes Toto to instantly morph into the wolf, an unstoppable killing machine that rips through whatever gets in its path.
As expected, he doesn't stay invincible for long. After a few seconds, he returns to his human form, so it's a smart idea to save the wolf for when you desperately need it. That said, snagging gold coins lets you upgrade both Toto and his alter ego, giving you the opportunity to extend werewolf time.
Overall, the game's quite enjoyable. You maneuver Toto with left and right arrows, while attacking and jumping with those respective buttons. On the downside, things rarely change. You'll always encounter the same enemies, and the developers should have created a more diverse collection of scenery.
What's here, though, looks beautiful. Wolf Boy is without question one of the iPhone's most attractive 2-D games, full of pretty hand drawn artwork and cool special effects. We just wish there was more variety.
Then again, you get what you pay for. At .99, Wolf Boy is a good bargain, especially if the developers add new content. But even if they don't, we suggest that you download this addictive beat-em-up in the near future. Go ahead. Unleash your inner wolf.
What's Hot: Pretty hand drawn graphics, enjoyable beat-em-up gameplay, cute hero, angry tomatoes.
What's Not: Same old thing throughout the entire game, quite difficult.
4/5
