Super Crossfire HD iPad Review
Chillingo's Super Crossfire HD looks like something that was yanked from an 80s arcade, and therein lies its charm. Radian Games' frenetic shooter challenges players to plow through 150 waves of progressively difficult enemies while enjoying retro style graphics that hark back to the glory days of gaming.
The unique twist comes in the form of a cool warp mechanic that lets gamers move their ships from the bottom to the top of the screen (and vice versa) to avoid enemy fire. It definitely puts a fun spin on the Space Invaders style formula.
On top of that, there's an upgrade system featuring ten different areas to enhance. Among them, Ship Armor, Ship Speed, Number of Shots and Shot Power. Whether or not players want to go with all out offense or select a more defensive minded approach is entirely up to them.
Strip those two elements (the warp and upgrades) away, and it's a standard yet still entertaining old school shooter, with screens full of aliens and explosions.
The only thing we dislike is the music, which fails to capture and enhance the game's intensity. It's a bit too hokey for our tastes.
That issue notwithstanding, Super Crossfire HD will thrill players of all ages, giving them a chance to cut through extraterrestrial hordes on the go.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 3.1.3 or later.
What's Hot: Classic Space Invaders style shooting, neat warp feature, ten ship upgrades, 150 waves of bad guys, retro visuals.
What's Not: Disappointing music, a bit pricey at $2.99.
