Squid Drop iPhone Review
Squid Drop is a sharp looking and deceptively challenging App that doesn't try to shove complex control schemes and some whacked out story down our throats. There's a cute and oddly huggable squid, user-friendly controls and attractive graphics, all for the low price of $0.99.
Think of this game as the opposite of Doodle Jump, where instead of reaching new heights, the goal is to descend, carefully guiding the squid through a series of levels full of danger.
That said, the controls are easy enough for anyone to grasp. You just slide a finger back and forth across the screen to direct the constantly moving squid, paying close attention to the changing environment.
On that note, you'll navigate the little guy around a variety of hazards, including mazes and enemies. One hit kills the squid, so it's in your best interest to keep a close eye on the terrain.
For the most part, it's a lot of fun and a great way to kill an hour or even a couple of minutes. We also dig the in-game achievements, as well as the concept of a low score that posts to a global leaderboard. We just need Nor Eagle to turn it on. The Low Scores page says (at the bottom) "Last updated 2001-01-01", so it's clear the developer still has work to do.
In addition, we'd like to see Game Center support, as well as the ability to choose individual levels instead of them appearing at random. Finally, the game needs individual leaderboards for each stage, as some are easier than others.
Squid Drop is in need of an update, but it's still a cool App well worth your time. On a related note, the sooner we have a squid plush toy, the better. Seriously, we just want to pinch its little face.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.
What's Hot: Addictive gameplay, responsive touch controls, adorable squid, catchy theme music, different levels.
What's Not: Leaderboard doesn't work, no HD version, levels appear at random, only one leaderboard for all levels..
