Gretzky NHL 06 (PSP) Review

The Sony PSP hasn't been on the market for seven months and Sony's put out yet another hockey game, and like the previous edition, Gretzky NHL 06 comes up short.

That's because with each feature thrown into the handheld version of the game, we run into a similar obstacle that prevents us from having a good time. Let's review each one starting with the season mode. What you do within the season mode is simply play a full season of hockey. It's as specific as it gets really. That's because all that's really involved is the hockey itself. There's no franchise to put together or a dynasty to build, and no way to create your own players. What a dull approach.

Furthermore, the gameplay itself, while a bit more grounded than its lame console cousin, has too many AI issues. Not only is the goalie superlative no matter which team you choose (when did the Islanders get such outstanding defense?), but the passing seems to work in a rubber-band pattern to the point that you can't even organize a solid check unless it's by luck.

The visuals look alright, but the overall package doesn't look as glossy as it should. Furthermore, the sound is minimized to simple hockey effects, like your typical slams on the ice and some hockey music from the organ grinder.

Finally, the game does offer the Wayne-vs-Wayne mode as seen in the console version, but when you try to play against others via Ad Hoc or Wi-Fi, you find yourself merely limited to the main game. No bonus options, no heavy roster changes. It's just hockey at its simplest.

With a bit more work, this game could've had the potential to be a true blockbuster. As is, this is just a sloppy and featureless product and I don't recommend it. Unless you're an absolute hockey zealot who needs to take their game on the road, pass on Gretzky NHL 06.

Score:

What's Hot: It's better than the last game, but that's not saying much.

What's Not: The AI is too good for its own good.
