Lost Review

Good graphics, animation and mechanics, solid adventure game, lots of weapons and items to use.
Doesn't make an effort to use the full capabilities of the license; you only play as Jack; Jack is boring
I personally have grown quite tired of Lost; the show's been going on for three seasons and has made a particularly good effort to reveal as little as possible about what's happening on that island, so I've lost interest, probably like a lot of other viewers. Still, I did muster some curiosity when Gameloft announced it would be making the show into a mobile game. It being such a complex program, how anyone, despite their skill, might manage to adapt it in game form was certainly a legitimate question. Gameloft, however, has succeeded to do so, albeit only partially.
For those who haven't seen the show, Lost tells the story of a handful of plane crash survivors, brought together apparently by the fact that they've all done something bad before. As their stay on the mysterious tropical island lengthens, their experience becomes very odd as the island reveals its secrets. This includes the discovery of a polar bear, several hatches containing comfortable looking rooms, being chased by moving black smoke, and having to press a button every 108 minutes. And that's only the second season. The game adaptation takes a strong focuses mostly on the show's action elements.
In accordance with the show's appearance, Lost has been given a highly polished look. Despite not using 3D elements, the game's graphics are very impressive, making practical use of many colors to create an authentic feel of the island. Animation is also smooth, maintaining at least some of the fast-paced atmosphere from the show. Music and sound effects are usual Gameloft fare, looping, atmosphere-contributing and appropriate throughout.
The game spans 12 levels, each with its fair share of puzzle solving, action and dialogue with the rest of the survivors. The game puts you in control of Dr Jack and only Dr Jack, which is rather disappointing, as the survivors have several different personalities and skills as shown in the show that could have been put to good use in the game. The main objective is to primarily find out what's going on, and second to survive by finding food and provisions. For this, Locke, another survivor, gives you weapons, starting with a hunting knife then moving on to more powerful items such as a pistol and dynamite, which can be scrolled through in your inventory.
During the game, Kate, Hurley and Locke will give you objectives to complete for each level. These usually consist of killing an certain number of bulls, eagles and snakes while getting to the other side of a path, which will signal the end of a level. This becomes quite repetitive as the game progresses. The game does however try to stay faithful to the show, containing several encounters with the black smoke monster thing (whatever it is), among other aspects.
Overall, the foundations of Lost are nothing we haven't seen before: a well-built, consistent action/adventure game with some variation. However, for a game based on such a gripping, suspense-filled show, some people may feel as if Gameloft haven't reached their full potential here, creating an entertaining yet seemingly half-hearted game.
