Eagle Eye Review

Solid two character puzzle solving, well implemented controls.
Limited audio, boring grapple mini-game, not nearly as much fun as other games in the genre.
Say what you will about the film, but the Eagle Eye mobile game (available for J2ME, BREW, WIN MOBILE and BLACKBERRY) is a decent side scrolling adventure that has you beating up security guards, snatching top secret documents and solving puzzles. You'll experience things from a couple of perspectives, as levels feature different characters from the film, including a pint-size version of lady magnet Shia LaBeouf. But while it's a well made video game, there's nothing particularly interesting about it, and it doesn't measure up to such mobile hits as God of War and Prince of Persia.
Similar to the film, you play as Jerry Shaw and Rachel Holloman, two innocent civilians thrust into a battle for survival against their will. They work together to solve the game's puzzles and beat up bad guys, using their unique skills to survive. In Rachel's case, she is an expert at climbing into air vents and reappearing in other areas. However, she cannot jump or activate levers. Those skills fall on Jerry, so in order to succeed, you must use both characters in tandem. For example, if you come to a crawlspace, Rachel can slither through it (another one of her talents), and then you'll use Jerry to jump around and meet her on the other side. This sometimes proves annoying, since, after getting one character to the goal, you'll have to switch characters and have them run across the entire level to proceed. It's boring.
You'll also square off against security guards and other enemies, but the combat isn't that enjoyable. When you engage a bad guy (or vice versa), the screen goes black except for a circle surrounding you and your soon to be unconscious foe. To punch, you press up or down on the phone's home/ok button to hit high and low, respectively. Occasionally, you'll find yourself in a grapple, and all you need to do is press the home/ok button whenever the energy bar reaches green. Fill your meter and you'll be able to score a few hits.
In addition, you'll play as Zoe, a government agent looking to uncover the secrets behind Eagle Eye. This involves infiltrating government buildings, avoiding land minds (always a dangerous work hazard) and wall jumping. She also gets to mix it up with the game's baddies, but instead of the whole grapple deal, you can string combos together by repeatedly pressing the home/ok button.
Eagle Eye even has some mini games, such as computer hacking and lock picking. We prefer the latter, which challenges you to maneuver your pick through a few tumblers as they move up and down the screen.
All of this amounts to an average brawler that cannot hang with the better games in its genre. We don't hate Eagle Eye. On the contrary, its developers did a fine job crafting a solid adventure worth killing a few hours with, but we've seen everything it has to offer in previous mobile games, and what's here was done better. Unless you can't live without a video game Shia in your pocket, go with God of War: Betrayal instead.
