Major Mayhem iPad Review

Adult Swim is one of the few App Store publishers that have rarely (if ever) let us down. The company is behind such entertaining hits as Robot Unicorn Attack, Monsters Ate My Condo and Amateur Surgeon. More recently, it teamed with Rocket Jump to release Major Mayhem, a simple to play and exciting shooter that brings to mind 80s action films like Commando and 90s light gun arcade titles, including Time Crisis.

This $0.99 App, universal for both iPhone and iPad, places you into the combat boots of one Major Mayhem, a muscle bound killing machine sent into three unique locations (Tropics, Metropolis, Desert) to battle ninjas and heavily armed thugs to save the world from destruction, and his girlfriend to boot.

Playing couldn't be simpler. As enemies appear, tapping these lowlifes instructs Mayhem to pop out from behind cover and fire. Each tap equates to a single shot and multiple evildoers appear on screen, so the goal is to not only eliminate them, but also achieve high scores by preserving the multiplier, even if it means slaughtering innocent chickens along the way.

That's essentially the gist of it, though the developers throw a few curveballs in the form of tanks, war planes and light platforming segments that force you to quickly tap the screen with two fingers to make Mayhem jump across fallen trees and spiked pits.

Meanwhile, he begins the game with a pistol, but you'll soon upgrade to an automatic rifle and shotgun. Even grenades enter the picture, presenting the opportunity to kill multiple bad guys with a single throw.

It's a bit repetitive, and with only three environments, visually limited, but Major Mayhem delivers thrilling arcade style fun. Worth a buck? Absolutely.

Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 3.1.3 or later.
