PapiMissile Review

Our Score
What's Hot
Missile Command style gameplay, excellent slide controls, online leaderboard, free.
What's Not
Gold missiles suck, you need to access Safari to read how to play, you cannot post scores in game.

It finally happened. Sunflat, makers of the enjoyable Mr. Papi iPhone series, published a game we don't like. PapiMissile's designer(s) had good intentions, to merge the red smiley face with Missile Command style gameplay, but the result is much too hard and boring to enjoy. That said, at least it's free.

In PapiMissile, the goal is to defend three targets from incoming missiles. To do this, you place your finger on a target and slide it upwards to attack. Missiles come from all angles and you're free to slide in every direction except downwards. If one of the missiles hits a target, said target blows up and you can no longer use it. During play, however, UFOs randomly appear on screen, and shooting one will replace a target.

Destroyed missiles yield points, and after you lose all of the targets, you can upload your score to an online leaderboard. Doing this forces you out of the game and into Safari, but at least you have the opportunity to compare your scores with everyone else's.

That is, if you want to. As much as we enjoyed Missile Command, we can't get behind this video game. For one, it's much too difficult, no thanks to the gold missiles that require two hits to destroy. That's easy during the first few minutes of play, but considerably harder as additional missiles crowd the screen. The fact that it takes a second or two to reload your cannon only adds to the frustration.

On top of that, PapiMissile gets old fast. Missile Command was cool 29 years ago, but today, not so much. As a result, we lost interest within a few minutes. You could make the argument that Sunflat designed it for quick plays between errands and work, but after trying it several times, we have no intention of playing it again.

So is PapiMissile a terrible game? Hardly. It'll keep you amused for a little while. It's just a small blemish on what is otherwise a respected series. If you're curious, download it for free. Otherwise, wait for Mr. Papi's next appearance.
