Frogger Review

Better looking than the arcade original, retains the same classic gameplay.
Tilt controls feel gimmicky, slide controls aren't perfect, boring overall.
Much like the 1981 original, the goal is to guide a frog past oncoming traffic and across a river and to its home while dodging cars, trucks and alligators. Doing this five times in the same stage advances you to the next level, and you basically repeat this process until you fall asleep or thankfully receive an incoming call.
Konami attempted (weakly) to spruce things up by giving its game a decent 2-D facelift and adding touch and tilt controls. The former is the best option, as you tap the screen in the desired direction to make Frogger move. It's workable, but occasionally reads down when you meant up, which more often than not sends Frogger into the water and kills him.
As for the other control scheme, it challenges you to maneuver your frog by repeatedly tilting the iPhone. While novel, it's a bit too sensitive for our taste (the slightest movement can send Frogger in the wrong direction) and doing this obscures the screen for a moment, since you keep tilting it from view. You can adjust the sensitivity, but making it too low means you'll need sharp jerks to make sure Frogger moves, and we already foresee many iPhones slipping from sweaty hands.
All of this amounts to a game that is past its prime and way overpriced. At $1-$3, Konami may have snagged us, but $9.99 is an insult to iPhone users. If you're still interested, wait for the hopefully inevitable price drop.
