What's Not
Poor steering controls, courses look the same, you can't see what's ahead.

Audi is one of best car manufacturers in the world and we suggest it sticks to designing automobiles. Its recently released iPhone game, Audi A4 Driving Challenge, is a top down 2-D racing game where you attempt to beat high scores while weaving between orange cones. But instead of being the phone's first Gran Turismo, it feels more like a driving test. All we need is the angry instructor.

For zero dollars, you get to download and race as a black Audi. No yellow, no fire engine red and no blue; just jet-black. You can also forget about exploring some of the world's most famous cities and courses. The developers drop you onto what looks like a parking lot and ask you to drive through cones by tilting your iPhone like a steering wheel. Furthermore, instead of mimicking Crash Nitro Kart 3D's smooth controls, Audi's developers concocted this ridiculous control scheme where your car skids all over the place, and hitting a cone deducts seconds from your lap time. Now imagine smashing into 60 cones in a single race, and you have an idea how much you'll probably suck.

It's a shame, because Audi has some good ideas in place. We like the gas and break pedals on the right and left sides of the screen, respectively and the touch controls work great. But there's nothing fun about not being able to see more than an inch in front of you. Without a mini-map of the course, it's impossible knowing all of the twists and turns unless you memorize the maps, and in order to do that, you'll need to play longer than you should.

With limited course design, only one available car and annoying tilt controls, Audi A4 is one of the iPhone's worst free apps. Audi tried to cash in on its name and instead pumped out a horrible video game that chokes on its exhaust. Leave this one in the shop.
