Ice Rage iPad Review
Ice Rage is the type of game that would have been somewhat cool a few years ago during the App Store's infancy. Today, it's an empty shell, a tech demo that holds much promise and fails to deliver long term thrills.
It's sort of like air hockey, but with two players per side. You jump into a game against the computer (Easy, Medium, Hard) or another person via the same iPhone/iPad, then play a single period that lasts one minute, 45 seconds.
Yes, one period, in a sport with three, and for less than two minutes.
That's essentially the gist of it. You cannot adjust the time, switch arenas or compete in tournaments. It's the red team versus the blue team, two versus two. There are no bonus modes or options to speak of.
Meanwhile, the developers at Mountain Sheep have the nerve to charge $0.99 to download the game, then another $0.99 to make an in-app purchase. Sorry, but we don't need the Santa Player Pack that badly.
The best part, though, is the concept art on the game's App Store page that showcases five on five hockey. That doesn't even belong there.
Thing is, Ice Rage is far from a bad game per se. It plays fine, with an on-screen arrow that lets you guide the puck into the opposing net and a virtual analog stick that works quite well.
We just cannot believe the nerve of these designers to overcharge (yes, a dollar too much) for something that should obviously be free. Is it fun against a friend? Sure, but don't expect to play it for more than ten minutes.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.2 or later.
What's Hot: Using the on-screen arrow to aim, furious hockey action, universal.
What's Not: No bonus modes to speak of, only one period, developers charge for a character pack, game costs $0.99 too much.
