Contract Killer: Zombies iPad Review
Considering the time of year, it would be easy to begin this review by saying, "with Halloween right around the corner", but who are we kidding? Zombie-themed video games are a year round occurrence, and fans can't get enough. Glu Games is readily aware of this, and released Contract Killer: Zombies, a free to play iPhone and iPad app where the goal should already be readily apparent.
As the title implies, you play as a hired gun, charged with blasting undead freaks of all shapes and sizes. With the action viewed from a first person and fixed perspective, you sit atop a virtual perch picking off flesh eaters with a variety of weapons that fall into the most desired categories, be it automatic/sniper rifles, pistols, shotguns and even grenade launchers.
Missions, meanwhile, are what you've probably come to expect in a video game featuring zombies. During the course of this post apocalyptic adventure, you must protect civilians and your partner, Evelyn, from becoming a monster's snack. Succeed, and you'll earn a modest amount of cash that goes towards that shiny10-gauge you've had an eye on.
That said, therein lies the catch. In typical free to play fashion, it'll take forever (no exaggeration) to amass the requisite amount of dough to buy the higher priced toys, some of which you'll need gold to purchase, which serves as a separate type of currency.
Of course, Glu is more than happy to supply all forms of virtual monies, for a fee, of course. You may also grab some gold by singing up for various services, including Netflix and Gamefly, or buying chocolate covered strawberries. We're dead serious, especially on that last one.
You can stick it to the man and refuse to pay one cent, but beware. The further you progress, the tougher those zombies become, and it won't be long before you get stuck with a wimpy gun and little hope of advancing.
That is, unless you grow weary from boredom. Although we have no qualms with Glu's free to play model, some imagination would have gone a long way into making Contract Killer: Zombies more exciting. As such, expect to visit the same locations and complete the same missions repeatedly. Seriously, how many times must we protect Evelyn while she slowly carries supplies?
Taking this into account, Contract Killer: Zombies is a moderately enjoyable distraction that lets you slaughter reanimated corpses on the go. Just don't expect to play it long, unless you can't resist investing some real world cash.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.0 or later.
What's Hot: Free zombie shooting fun, a sweet variety of weapons, universal download.
What's Not: Lack of mission variety, grinding to afford the best gear.
