Bug Princess iPad Review
If you think the only good bug is a dead one, be sure to download Bug Princess for both iPhone and iPad. Originally released in 2004, this bullet hell shoot-em-up throws you into a fantasy world overrun with abnormally large insects. With no shoe large enough to squash these pests, there's only one thing left to do: blast them to smithereens.
Each stage takes you through colorful environments infested with scorpions, maggots and other disgusting critters. Since the game's hero, Princess Reco, fires automatically, you just need to worry about dodging the hundreds of projectiles flooding the screen and grabbing valuable pick-ups to change weapons.
To that end, you have three options before attacking a stage. M-Power is the best all around weapon that also provides limited protection. W-Power, meanwhile, is a wide shot best suited for large groups of creatures. Finally, S-Power is a concentrated and powerful attack that helps you obliterate one enemy at a time.
Being a Cave shooter, expect no mercy from the hordes of baddies descending on your location. You'll need quick fingers to skillfully weave between streams of bullets, while at the same time keeping a close eye on Reco so that you don't lose her amid the chaos.
That said, we had a lot of fun with Bug Princess. Things blow up real good, and the touch screen enabled slide controls work wonderfully. The action gets crazy, but on the flip side, the developers included four difficulties.
On top of that, you can expect a variety of modes, from All Stages (where you go through each board one after the other) to Score Attack and Maniac (even more bullets to avoid).
Actually, there's little to complain about, aside from excessive loading. While not a deal breaker by any means, the fact that it has to load after exiting a menu seems excessive.
Aside from that, Bug Princess is a furious arcade style blast fest that serves as a welcome addition to the App Store library. It costs more than most titles ($4.99), but after slaughtering thousands of creepy crawlies, we feel it was money well spent.
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 4.1 or later.
What's Hot: Destroying waves of insects, four difficulties, small but satisfying number of modes, OpenFeint and Game Center support, universal.
What's Not: Too much loading, dated graphics.
