Blocky Roads iPhone Review
Glance at a screenshot of Blocky Roads, and your immediate reaction may well be to file it with that large pile of Minecraft-"inspired" games that do very little indeed to actually inspire anyone. Put such thoughts aside, however, because Rocky Roads doesn't just have a softer aesthetic that's entirely its own, it's also a damn good fun physics racer to boot. Think Hill Climb Racing with much more polish under the hood, and you're most of the way there.
Not only is the game gorgeous to look at and listen to, each one of the dozen courses has a very distinct feel, and a steady stream of new obstacles and challenges are sprinkled throughout the game. Like the best physics racers, the trick is to make your fuel go further with each run, while also carefully balancing your ride to gather up as many coins as you can. Those coins are used to buy vehicle upgrades, and you'll also unlock new cars, tracks, and decorative items over time.
There are a few minor niggles about the game, none of which should put you off buying Blocky Roads. For example, you can see unlocked vehicles in the garage, but not their stats - so you're never sure how much money you should plough into upgrading your earlier vehicles. Likewise, the constant cycle of upgrade/go further could become a little repetitive in time.
We challenge anyone who spends even a small amount of time with Blocky Roads not to full under its spell. It's a superb physics racer that stands alongside the very finest, there's more care and originality in the presentation than a cursory glance would suggest, and it's stuffed to the brim with content to unlock. Fans of Hill Climb Racing looking for a new challenge should look no further.
