NinJump Rooftops iPad Review
Backflip Studios left its mark on the endless running genre with the enjoyable NinJump. Now it's back with a well-implemented follow-up, NinJump Rooftops, where you exchange hopping along walls in favor of running across rooftops, defeating enemies and avoiding big drops.
NinJump Rooftops caters to the classic style of endless runner, where you try to collect as many coins as possible while completing objectives along the way, similar to Jetpack Joyride. Meanwhile, you'll earn a few power-ups to help enhance your run, including a coin magnet, a size doubler and others.
Rooftops continues the original NinJump's simplistic nature, with an easy-to-learn system consisting of jumping and striking enemies. The developers regulated both actions to the same button, so you can easily pounce on nearby foes. In addition, hitting three enemies of the same kind in a row unleashes a mega power-up that allows you to collect more coins, including a fast-moving throwing star and an unstoppable bird.
On top of that, there are items you can unlock (and purchase, if you're impatient), but overall, it's a very fair, cost-free system.
Finally, the presentation is excellent. It's nothing over the top, but NinJump Rooftops remains colorful and joyous throughout. Definitely impressive, considering the game is free.
Compared to most conventional mobile games these days, NinJump Rooftops' formula has been done countless times before. However, considering the game works so well, that's hardly a complaint.
One minor thing we would've eliminated are the tip screens that pop up after each round, forcing you to dismiss them. We already know how to play, thanks.
While simpler than other mobile games, NinJump Rooftops is a charming follow-up and worth downloading. In the end, this ninja's as sharp as ever.
