A new game in the Cut The Rope series - rather than a sprinkling of new levels - represents a formidable challenge for developer ZeptoLab. The franchise isn't just a mere member of the ubiquitous mobile physics puzzle family, it jostles continually for the position of Godfather with Angry Birds. It's also broadly accessible to wide segments of the audience, yet still manages to satisfy both thanks to deftly designed puzzles that artfully weave together increasingly difficult, yet logical, puzzles.

Faced with this challenge of freshening up the series with an entirely new standalone game, while keeping the faithful punters happy at the same time, ZeptoLab has taken an approach with Cut The Rope: Time Travel that's coy at first, but unfolds in a way that's far more likely to cater to hardcore gamers in the long run.

Finding him/it-self in possession of a time machine, Om Nom's new adventure takes him on a journey through history, from The Stone Age to the Renaissance periods, with plenty of stop-offs in-between. Taken at face value it feels somewhat gimmicky, in the same way that Angry Birds continues to pull its themes from the dictionary of popular culture, but what this new title introduces is a dual challenge that's both familiar and refreshingly different.

In each stage of history Om Nom is joined by an ancestor of that era, effectively doubling the difficulty level as you attempt to solve each level by manipulating two pieces of candy simultaneously - one for each greedy gob. Feed both of the critters and you'll complete the level, and picking up all three of the stars littered around each stage maximizes your clearance rating.

In addition there are plenty of new mechanics to contend with. Metal chains can only be sliced by swinging saws which also destroy any candy they come into contact with, for example. Flying candies follow the trajectories you carve for the other, while snappable rubber bands allow you to deliver explosive force against objects in the game. Most interestingly of all is the freeze button, allowing you to pause the unfolding physics entirely, then restart the action with all previous momentum forgotten. These new components, along with many others in the game are blended together superbly, and in a logically satisfying escalation of difficulty too.

If there's a sour note to this otherwise sweet gameplay, it's in-app purchase Telekinesis system that allows players to bypass the physics of the game entirely and steer candies around the screen. The school of thought that says paid-for mobile games can include IAPs, as long as they're applied to only the most impatient gamer, is a steadily growing one. But if there's a game that can afford to dream a little bigger when it comes to its base pricing, then that game is surely Cut The Rope - particularly given the publisher's track record for feeding titles with generous and free content updates. A hint system, for example, would sit a little more happily within a game series that delivers its satisfaction based on measured, deliberate forethought and precision from its players.

That aside, Cut The Rope: Time Travel is quite the achievement for ZeptoLab. The blending of mechanics, particularly in later levels, may cater a little more towards the hardened Cut The Rope veteran, but there's much to be enjoyed by everyone in this new adventure. It represents a bold evolution for the core gameplay, the levels are as tightly designed as you'd expect, and there'll no doubt be many more of them in future updates.

What's Hot:Some clever new mechanics and a bold evolution for one of the grand dames of mobile puzzle gaming. There's plenty of content now, and there's sure to be more coming.

What's Not:The Telekinesis system - easy as it is to avoid using - is a poor fit for the game, both as an ability and an in-app purchase.
