Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier Preview

Jak and his smart-mouth partner return for more platforming antics, this time on PSP.
Jak and Daxter took a long four-year hiatus. The duo, first introduced in 2001 in the PlayStation 2 platformer, The Precursor Legacy, wrapped up their original trilogy with Jak 3 and motored around in Jak X: Combat Racing. Since 2005, however, we haven't heard a peep from them, save for Daxter's solo excursion on the PSP and a guest appearance in the downloadable PSN game, Pain. This holiday season, they make their long-awaited return on the PlayStation Portable with Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier.
The story picks up right where the original trilogy left off. Just when Jak and his female friend Keira thought they were going to have a happy ending, they discover that their world is short on Eco energy. After a little bit of research, Keira learns that Precursor machinery sitting near the edge of the world has plenty of the precious energy to spare. However, they find themselves pitted not only against time, but also a group of sky pirates that want the Eco for their own personal needs.
Sky Pirates play a pivotal role in the game. Not only will you combat enemies on the ground using a combination of Jak and Daxter's ground attacks, but you'll also take to the skies in one of five different planes, shooting enemies while keeping your aircraft in one piece. Each one has certain advantages and disadvantages. Some carry more ammunition, while others allow you to easily dodge attacks.
The Gunstaff, one of the game's new weapons, transforms into other devices, including the Peace Maker, the Shockwave Concussor and the Vulcan Fury. Each one has specific effects that cause a lot of damage, but you'll want to use its power sparingly.
On top of that, Jak isn't the only one with new powers. When Daxter comes in contact with Dark Eco, he turns into Dark Daxter, a beastier version of himself with spikes poking out of his back. He can unleash spin attacks and also jump in the air and unleash an earth-rattling ground pound.
Thus far, it appears that Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier will be a great addition to the PSP library. We'll review the game when it arrives later this year.
