DJ Max Fever Preview

One of the PSP's best music series hits the U.S. in all its beat mixing glory.
Savvy importers already know the greatness that is DJ Max Portable. Pentavision's exquisite and Asia exclusive PSP music series had us button tapping until our batteries died. In fact, we love the first game so much we awarded it a generous perfect score, and followed up its sequel with an impressive four out of five. Now DJ Max comes stateside in the form of DJ Max Fever, complete with all the beat scratching goodness.
DJ Max Fever, available November 11, is a DJ simulator that challenges you to hit buttons along with a song's beat, frantically mangling your PSP as notes quickly scroll from the top of the screen to the bottom. Similar to Guitar Hero, you press buttons as the notes line up with the icons along the bottom of the screen. As expected, these notes eventually move faster, forcing you to act quickly.
Instead of just porting one of the aforementioned games to the U.S., publisher PM Studios and Pentavision merged the two. As a result, DJ Max Fever comes with over 100 songs, along with various modes. Extreme challenges ask you to complete goals and there's a Freestyle mode that appears when you achieve a perfect mix of beats. In addition, you'll enjoy five difficulty levels, a presumably offline Network Battle Mode and finally, a gallery to house all of the unlocked content; this includes images, music videos and other cool stuff.
Although we're happy to see the game, its soundtrack may or may not appeal to western audiences. DJ Max Fever's prequels have a lot of international music, which may confuse Rock Band and Guitar Hero fans that love more familiar songs. We hope the developer gathers a wide range of content from various artists.
Then again, it's not like we have many PSP games to look forward to. We'll gladly welcome a game with potentially funky music over yet another EA Sports release. Kudos to PM Studios for bringing DJ Max Fever to our shores. We'll make sure to charge our PSP batteries in anticipation.
