There can only be One - at least when you're talking about kick-ass fighting games on Nokia N-Gage!
While some of you insist that Nokia's N-Gage isn't the right platform for any sort of game, lately I've been defending the system. After all, with great ports of Colin McRae, X-Men Legends, and SSX, the handheld has been on a pretty good roll. Now that Nokia's tackled shooters, sports, and side scrolling hack-an-slashers, it's moved into the fighting arena with One, a fully 3D brawler that has slick visuals and some cool online features.
One is a pretty unique fighter in that it doesn't really have a cast of characters. You're actually charged with giving it some personality by creating your own competitor using a very extensive create-a-fighter system that allows you to customize just about everything, including body, clothing, hair, and even tattoos. From there you hop onto the N-Gage arena and basically seek out opponents or friends since you're able to form clans. You can even follow certain fighters and track their win/loss records.
I'm sure it'll give some of you a nice warm feeling that you can make underground fighting friends, but let's get serious for a minute. The whole purpose of this game is to locate chumps and bludgeon them until their faces resemble three week old hamburger meat, and thankfully One will allow you to do just that. In fact, it's so sophisticated that if you put your N-Gage into your pocket and walk past someone else who also has One (odds be damned), you'll be automatically entered into a fight.
It's somewhat of a real shame that Nokia's making a new N-Gage because I feel like we haven't seen enough games that really take advantage of the hardware, and One is a prime example. This game looks absolutely amazing, looking slightly better than a fighting game on the original PlayStation. The environments, which include underground dwellings and stockyards full of crates, all look fantastic, and don't get me started on the animation. It's superb, and the game moves at quick frame rate!
Even though Nintendo and Sony are beating the hell out of one another in the handheld war, you've got to respect Nokia. The company is sticking with its portable system and continues to pump out quality hits, and One looks like yet another must-own title for the N-Gage. I love the idea of having to create your own fighter, and the online options as well as the detailed graphics make this one to watch out for. Expect more in-depth One impressions at this year's E3.
