Extreme Road Trip 2 Hit No.1 US Chart Spot In 60 Hours
In an interview with Modojo, Extreme Road Trip 2 developer Guillaume Germain of Roofdog Games has revealed that the game raced to the top of the US free game charts within just 60 hours of its release. Not bad considering the first edition of the franchise took a little longer to hit the top spot at three weeks.
The developer also discussed how Roofdog Games went about developing the sequel to the enormously popular first game, as well as monetizing this particular title.
"People really like the first game. So the priorities were mainly to add features around the core of the first game, without changing what was nice about it. People complained about having to pay real money for cars in the first game, so we introduced currencies in the second game to allow people to unlock cars through gameplay.
"We make sure first and foremost that people can have fun in the game and will be able to unlock cars through gameplay, but only up to a point. It seems we're somewhat generous at the beginning, but at the same time you can't realistically unlock everything only through gameplay.
Multiplayer seems like a natural fit for the racing series but, as Germain explains, it's not necessarily as simple as it sounds, or as popular a request as you might imagine.
"We have thought about live multiplayer but we don't know how much of a demand there really is for it," he explains.
"We've done (while working for other companies) live multiplayer games in the past, and we know it takes a while to get right. We might include it in this game or in a future iteration, it's still undecided
During our conversation, the developer also revealed that Roofdog are interested in exploring game ideas beyond the Extreme Road Trip franchise:
"There are a lot of games we want to make," Germain said.
"We have multiple playable prototypes and we're pretty sure by now what our next game is going to be. It's going to be very different from Extreme Road Trip. However, we'll also do other games in the Extreme Road Trip genre. Even though the gameplay itself is very simple, there are some variants of it that we want to create."
