PlayStation App Coming To iOS And Android Devices
You might not have heard about this on the internet, but apparently there's a new PlayStation coming out before the end of this year and Sony held a small party in New York last night to celebrate. So what does that have to do with mobile gaming?
Well, buried within the deluge of press releases delivered to the media last night (spotted by IGN), details about a new app called - imaginatively - 'PlayStation App' will allow iPhone, iPad and Android owners to use their device as a second screen, SmartGlass-style. Here's the full text from the announcement:
"A new application from SCE called 'PlayStation App' will enable iPhone, iPad, and Android- based smartphones and tablets to become second screens. Once installed on these devices, users can, for example, see maps on their second screens when playing an adventure game, purchase PS4 games while away from home and download it directly to the console at home, or remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices."
Further details about the app are currently unavailable, but we'll be keeping a close eye on this one. Given the growth of mobile gaming in recent years, we're not surprised to see Sony acknowledge this particular elephant in the room, but how will Microsoft evolve their own SmartGlass service to compete?
We'll likely have to wait until this year's E3 conference in June to find out.
