GDC 2008: Insomniac Goes Open Source
Written by Lance Wang on Friday, February 22, 2008
Free love, free code
As part of what they're calling the "Nocturnal Initiative", Insomniac games will be releasing pieces of its technology code for free on its official website.
This doesn't cover stuff like engine code, but it will help burgeoning companies with memory management, debugging and other important areas of game development. Basically, things that are simple enough that they can be utilized on any gaming platform.
No word on exactly "why" they're doing this. Presumably it's to improve its relations with other publishers/developers and to promote a greater sense of comradery among people in the industry. In a place where you're constantly fighting one another to get people to notice your work, it's nice to have someone offer you a cold drink and a handshake every now and then.
