Cooking Mama Franchise Reaches 1.6 Million Units Sold in the U.S.

Mama Mia!

The Cooking Mama franchise has reached 1.6 million units in sales on U.S. soil, according to Majesco Entertainment.

The franchise composes of meal-prepping mini-games that use the touch screen and Wii Remote. The Cooking Mama games were often subjected to adolescent "women belong in the kitchen" jokes (rest assured, we at Modojo will never stoop that low).

The original Cooking Mama, released for the Nintendo DS in September 2006, carried the torch by selling over one million units. It was followed by Cooking Mama: Cook Off for the Nintendo Wii in April 2007 and Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends for the DS in November 2007. Despite mediocre reviews, the franchise became a financial success.

"The success of Cooking Mama has been akin to catching lightning in a bottle," said Jesse Sutton, Chief Executive Officer, Majesco. "A unique concept, iconic main character and gameplay execution that fully utilizes the stylus and Wii Remote have proved to be a winning combination. We appreciate the continued support from all of Mama's fans and look forward to launching the fourth title in the franchise later this year."

What's next for Mama? Fans of the franchise can look forward to a Nintendo Wii sequel scheduled for release later this year.
