GDC 2006: Spore & Other EA brands go Mobile
Written by Justin Davis on Monday, March 20, 2006
Will Wright's ambitious project has been officially confirmed for a mobile release, along with many of EA's other properties...
Former Jamdat CEO (now EA Mobile Senior Vice President) Mitch Laskey gave GDC Mobile's keynote address this morning, and nonchalantly revealed a whole laundry list of the company's 2006 plans on one brief slide. EA Mobile plans to hit three major product categories with their 2006 line-up: Casual, Core, and Sports titles.
Casual titles include the Tetris license, which EA has the exclusive rights to for another 17 years, as well as usual suspects such as Bejeweled and Yahtzee. EA Sports' entire line-up is also slated for mobile, from Madden to Fifa.
Most interesting was the "core" games listed on the slide. Casually slipped into the middle of the list was a little game called Spore, confirming that the game will be hitting mobile phones. A mobile release had been rumored for weeks, after a job posting on GameDev.net noted EA was looking to hire for handheld Spore development. While it's possible other handheld versions are in the works, Modojo can now confirm that Spore will be hitting cellphones in 2006.
Other EA titles now confirmed to be hitting mobile include Battlefield, Sin City, Medal of Honor, Sims, and Need for Speed
