GDC: DS Goes Online

The announcement DS owners have been waiting to hear finally comes to fruition.

At the Game Developers Conference today, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed in his keynote speech that Nintendo will be sending its Nintendo DS online wirelessly, enabling gamers around the world the ability to connect to each other in games written specifically for the protocol, free of charge.

The service will begin later this year, and Nintendo DS users will be able to go online wirelessly at universal Wi-Fi hot spots in use all over the world. Animal Crossing DS will be one of the first titles to support global Wi-Fi connectivity. No other titles were specifically singled out as containing Wi-Fi support, but Mario Kart DS seems like a likely candidate.

To demonstrate the local-area wireless support, Iwata took part in an eight-player wireless competition of Mario Kart DS with audience members during his speech. Further details on the Wi-Fi service will be revealed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in May.
