The original Frogger (in which he had to navigate across a five-lane highway, through a river, and collect gems) was a classic. It was for many systems, including the incredibly famous Sony PlayStation 1.
Although it may have been a classic, in the opinions of me, and many people I know, Frogger should be among the Top 20, or even Top 15, worst video game franchises.
In no game was this more evident than the Gameboy Advance game *Frogger's Adventures: Temple of the Frog*.
I actually liked this game. It wasn't a bad game, but it was entertaining. The levels were well-designed and presented a formidable challenge, and the musical score was one of the best musical scores for any GBA game in the history of GBA games. But Frogger himself has a few flaws that create distractions from the gameplay.
First of all, in the graphics on the GBA that are upgraded versions of the graphics from the old Frogger games, we wee that Frogger (and his allies and enemies) are funny-looking. I don't know how, but if you saw the box art for this game, you'd know what I mean. I don't really know how to describe it. You have to see it for yourself.
Secondly, HE CAN'T DO ANYTHING! All you do in any Frogger game is try and survive, avoiding enemies at all costs. You can die so many different ways, including being run over by boulders, huge road-hogging vehicles, or being killed by archers, mostrous fireflies, goblins, snakes, or from drowning (why the heck does he drown? He's a FROG, not a toad, he should be able to swim!).
The fact that all Frogger games (this game especially) is/are 1-hit-kill games makes them tough. Especially tough. In this game, Frogger doesn't attack on his own, he can't protect himself, all he can do is avoid regular enemies, and in the Boss Fights all he has to do is step on switches that cause damage to the boss in some way.
Maybe that's why Frogger isn't a very good franchise. In any other franchises that are among the world's best, like Zelda, Mario, Sonic, Megaman, Pokémon, and too many others to count, you get to attack on your own and you have some sort of power-up to give your character extra strength, like Mushrooms in Mario, Rings and/or shields in Sonic, and armor in Megaman. In Frogger games, however, you get nothing of the sort. If you touch an enemy, even from behind and the enemy doesn't turn around, you still die.
In Frogger's Adventures: Temple of the Frog, this makes for an annoying experience.
The second-to-last thing I'm going to say about this game is that the overall level of difficulty is somewhat imbalanced, in my opinion. All the levels are challenging in their own ways, and you will experience one or two, or more, Game Overs in every Level. But there are only certain difficult qualities in the levels. Once you know how to get past those, the game is too easy. You can complete it easily once you know the way to beat those certain points.
Lastly, the Frogger franchise shouldn't have so many games, as all you have to do is survive and advance through these levels. Sure, in some Frogger games, there's a 2-Player option, but not in Temple of the Frog. It's one-player the whole way. With that, I say that while it's a less-than-decent game, it's not the worst game in the world.
