30. Bad Hotel

Bad Hotel really caught us by surprise when it hit the App Store back in August. On paper, it's nothing more complex than a tower-building game, but such a description does no justice to the darkly ambient mood of the game as you attempt to grow your tower ever higher while fending off an endless stream of attackers. You owe it to yourself to check into this hotel.

29. Knights of the Round Cable, AKA Super Knights

Chillingo's Knights of the Round Cable (now referred to as Super Knights for some reason) definitely belongs in the best games you've never played category. Sadly overlooked, this sparkling gem tests your swinging skills, as you maneuver a heroic knight around nodes collecting diamonds while avoiding dragons and rescuing fair maidens. A variety of heroes with unique abilities, user friendly touch controls and power-ups easily propel Knights into must have territory.

28. Tiny Wings HD

Although we would have preferred something new from one-man developer Andreas Illiger, we found it hard not to be impressed by this masterful HD edition of one of mobile gaming's greatest success stories. While it may for the most part be a polished version of the original game, we were very happy to have an iPad version of Tiny Wings at last, along with some brand-new gameplay features. It's a game that continues to charm the socks off us, and now it plays and looks better than ever.

27. Punch Quest

Retro nuts will adore Rocketcat's endless runner, a game that tasks users with pummeling whatever monsters get in their way, Double Dragon style, even if it means hopping on the back of a laser-spitting dinosaur. Branching paths will keep players second-guessing, and trippy scenarios involving a garden gnome and giant bees help put Punch Quest in a totally different realm of weirdness. A steal at $0.99.

26. Sleepwalker's Journey

Sleepwalker's Journey blew us away with its gorgeously surreal visuals and enchanting soundtrack when it hit the app stores in November. You'll need to guide a endlessly wandering, sleepwalking boy back to the comfort and safety of his bed in each of the game's many levels. Along the way, you'll have to contend with some very clever platform puzzle design, create paths to safety and think one step ahead.

25. WarGames WOPR

Movie-licensed games usually crash and burn, except when they don't. WarGames managed to buck the trend quite nicely, as players square off against the tricky defense computer for some Global Thermonuclear War. More than 40 puzzles, life-saving power-ups, neon graphics and cameos by the film's cast make this $0.99 download almost impossible to resist, especially if you grew up in the 80s.

24. Girls Like Robots

Adult Swim consistently delivers quirky but highly original and addictive games, and Girls Like Robots is one of the publisher's best from 2012. There's a generous selection of levels to work through as you struggle to place tiles on a series of boards and keep everyone happy. The catch? Girl tiles might like robot tiles, but every character in the game has its own dislikes. Keeping everyone happy in this eternal balancing act will become an obsession.

23. Dream of Pixels

Tetris, redefined. The geniuses at Dawn of Play took the decades-old puzzler and literally flipped it upside down, challenging players to deconstruct lines of Tetrominos instead of forming them. Five game modes, including 100 puzzles to solve, will keep you enthralled for hours, with soothing music and dreamy visuals complimenting this stellar head-scratcher.

22. Angry Birds Space

Rovio's mega-hit franchise boldly went where no bird had gone before. Angry Birds Space tweaked the tried and true formula by introducing gravity into the equation, forcing players to rethink their strategies on how to destroy those nefarious swine. Of course, this game served as a foundation of sorts for another Angry Birds title set in space, in a galaxy far, far away.

21. Pocket Planes

Last year's Tiny Tower kept us occupied for a surprising amount of time, but we were always left wanting more to do between those agonizing build timers. Fortunately, Pocket Planes delivered magnificently, and if you've ever wanted to grow your own toy aviation empire, you'll be lost in this latest game from Nimble Bit for hours. Starting off small, you'll gradually expand from being a local courier to the world's most prestigious global airline.
