Best Point-And-Click Games for iOS

The point-and-click adventure genre has had many an old-school publisher rummaging through their back-catalog for an App Store re-release, albeit with a fresh lick of paint. We'll forgive them though as touchscreen devices are perfectly suited to this sort of experience, and the genre contains some of our favorite games of all time. Here we highlight our best of the best.

The Secret of Monkey Island

The game (and its sequel) that needs no introduction sees Guybrush Threepwood working his way through an epic storyline that's chock full of humor. This iOS outing features graphics that are much improved over the original release, additional voice-over work and a great soundtrack. We don't even need to tell you to download the sequel LeChuck's Revenge which has received a similar degree of polish for mobiles.

Hector: Badge of Carnage Ep 1

Straandlooper's adults-only take on the adventure game series is a crude but extremely funny adventure game that could only have been created in the modern day. The first episode may be a little short, but it focuses on quality over quantity and there are two more episodes if you have the stomach for them. Foul-mouthed and disrespectful, don't say you weren't warned before downloading.

Back to the Future Ep 1 HD

Set after the events of Back to the Future 3, this iOS episodic game series sees Marty McFly and a host of familiar characters take part in a new adventure crafted by Telltale Games. Back to the Future features some wonderful 3D graphic renderings of the characters and environments, and there are five episodes to work your way through.

Broken Sword: Director's Cut

George & Nico's globe-trotting epic adventure brought a level of sophistication and narrative to gaming that was a shock to the system at first sight. Bringing brand new puzzles and narration to handheld devices, this iOS version of Broken Sword also made the transition to touchscreen devices effortlessly, with a mobile interface that any developer would be wise to learn from.

Myst

Like most people, I'm not all that ashamed to admit that the esoteric puzzle design of Myst was a little too much of a challenge for my younger self when it released. Alright I was nearly a teenager, but even so Myst was the very definition of a riddle wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.

At the forefront of interactive story-telling, Myst was beguiling, bewitching and (frankly) bloody hard. But it was also beautiful and it's a game that everyone should experience at least once in their lives.

Beneath a Steel Sky: Remastered

This remastered version of 1994's gritty cyberpunk adventure game features all of the great content from the original dystopian masterpiece, along with new movie cinematics, improved audio and a very handy help system.

On the run and under-pressure, Beneath a Steel Sky had story-writing that was mature beyond gaming's years, yet still managed to maintain enough gallows-humor to lend the tale some essential humanity. Well worth checking out if you missed this classic the first time around.

Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space Ep 1

Telltale Games was on development duty for this reinvention of the before-its-time videogame humor of Sam and Max. The first episode tasks the duo with facing off against Santa himself in order to rescue Christmas. Unlike in the "good-old" days, there's also an intuitive hint system should you find yourself hopelessly stuck.

As with all highly addictive offerings, the first sample is free while the remaining four episodes are available for a still-very-reasonable $2.99.
