Modojo Awards: E3 2006
Written by Modojo Staff on Thursday, May 18, 2006
E3 2006 was the single great showing handheld gaming has ever had. Between the second wave of DS and PSP titles and mobile gaming finally maturing enough to take its rightful place with the big boys, there was a hell of a lot to see (and judge)...
Modojo might exclusively cover handheld content, but that doesn't mean as gamers we don't get excited about console and PC gaming as well. Mass Effect, Gears of War, and of course Spore were among the many console and PC titles we made sure to check out this year at the show. Still, E3 week is probably the one week of the year we're happiest to be handheld enthusiasts. After all, handheld games (correctly designed handheld games, anyway) are designed to be played in short bursts. They're made expressly to be fun and engaging within the first few minutes. The demos tend to be shorter, creating shorter wait-times to check out each title, as well. Handheld games are perfect for E3.
Because of handheld gaming's inherent immediacy, we were able to check out nearly every portable title available on the show floor. Did the Wii offer a more compelling overall experience than the 360 this year? Is the PS3's launch line-up going to be any good? We can't begin to answer those questions. If you want to know what titles for your DS or PSP are most worthy of your attention and hard-earned dollars, however, you're reading the right E3 re-cap.
Let's first take a look at some honorable mentions. While these games weren't quite impressive enough to earn an actual award, they still managed to raise themselves out of the pack of hundreds of handheld & mobile titles on display, which is no small feat. Many of the titles below came into the show as major sleepers, so don't let them slip under your radar.
