Modojo's 2008 DS Wishlist
Written by Modojo Staff on Wednesday, January 9, 2008
If we close our eyes and want it bad enough, maybe some of these games really WILL materialize in 2008...
These DS games don't exist, besides in our hearts. Find out what games Modojo's editors excitedly dream about, and be sure to check back in 12 months when we revisit this article in order to crush our already-fragile spirits & egos, as we laugh at our own lack of predictive prowess.
Metal Gear Solid DS
Probability: 40%
Konami has taken advantage of its classic franchises and produced three excellent DS games. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, and Contra 4 have all been very well received. I think it's time for Konami to bring another gaming heavyweight to the Nintendo DS: Metal Gear. One of the best features of the series is the way the player feels submerged in the game. Nintendo's unique handheld seems perfect for this. Tapping on a wall to get an enemy's attention, using the stylus to slit an enemy's throat... and how about having any noise that is picked up by the DS's microphone alert nearby enemies of Snake's presence? Now that's immersion!

Super Smash Bros. DS
Probabilty: 85%
After three successful installments on consoles, the Super Smash Bros. series will be making its way to the Nintendo DS. Pretty much every other popular Nintendo franchises have their own handheld experience. Plus, how great would it be if Nintendo manages to implement Wi-Fi battles on handhelds? A guaranteed multi-million seller, Super Smash Bros. DS is a matter of when, not if.

DS Literature Collection: Freedom Edition
Probability: 15%
If In Touch Weekly's circulation numbers are anything to go by, Americans love to read. What better way for Nintendo to capitalize on our hyper-literate nation (and their own "Blue Ocean" strategy) than to bring their DS Literature Collection stateside? Of course, merely translating the hundreds of Japanese classics on the cart would probably relegate it to niche status, so why not grab a license with a formidable built-in library? Penguin Classics? The Modern Library? The Complete In Touch Weekly 2002-2008? The wonderment of scrolling through a comprehensive library of important literature or celebrity gossip, on your DS, whilst on the toilet. However, if having the likes of Nabokov, Joyce and Jamie Lynn Spears available to you via single DS cart sounds too good to be true, that's because it probably is.

Toe Jam & Earl DS
Probability: 5%
A terrible case of nostalgia? Maybe so, but I've always considered TJ&E as one of those games that fits so perfectly into the DS's circle of quirk. Given the vibrant 2D animation, unforgettable mini-games, and overall light-hearted nature of the series' universe, it's clear that my favorite funky duo couldn't find a better home than on Nintendo's handheld. Everything from moving the pair to launching tomatoes could easily be performed with a simple stylus-based interface while the top screen may be utilized for hints, dialogue, and in-game cut scenes. Besides, how could anybody resist a session of Jam Out redone with the Elite Beat Agents' treatment?
The odds of Toe Jam & Earl being revisited in such a form are abysmally low, to say the least, but an earthling can certainly wish!

Star Tropics 3
Probability: 10%
I don't think there's quite an audience for a large budgeted version of this franchise, so why don't we start it at some humble 2D roots on DS? Make the originals unlockable as a bonus, and have it come packaged with a new special parchment puzzle for nostalgia purposes. 747? Nay, 803!

Radiant Silvergun/Ikaruga Combo
Probability: lol
I love both of these games and nothing would satisfy me more than to see the both of them bundled together into an extravagant combo package. They could even utilize touch-screen play in some form for boss analyzation and switching colors of ships in Ikaruga. Please?

Bionic Commando DS
Probability: 50%
Now that Capcom has unveiled their "gritty" next-gen iteration, it's time to revisit the classic 2D Bionic Commando formula for a handheld system. Bionic Commando Elite Forces for the Gameboy Color was an admirable effort but development was farmed out to Nintendo Software Technology during a time when Capcom clearly wasn't interested in the franchise. Now that the license is a priority again, the game is a slam dunk and an easy tie-in to the 3D effort. Toss in touch screen gameplay, platforms aplenty, numerous Nazis to claw in the face, that classic eighties Rad Spencer attitude, and viola: Bionic Commando DS.
