PSOne Ports: Most Wanted
Written by Robert Falcon on Friday, January 5, 2007
The PSP has been home to many ports that didn't make much sense, but many classic Playstation titles would be right at home in the portable arena. Here's our most wanted...
Ports. It's something that we're going to see on the Sony PSP. We might as well accept it. Parappa the Rappa recently got released in Japan and is currently selling pretty well, and other games, including Hot Shots Golf and Tekken 2, are currently available for download at the PlayStation Store. So, with that, we've composed a list of games we wouldn't mind seeing on the PSP that have already seen their glory days on the PlayStation. Whether as a download through the PS3 or as a separate release, we feel that each of these games make some kind of impact that would do good business for the PSP library. If you have choices you feel we missed, feel free to submit your comments as to what you think would be a good release.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Konami)- There's really no better time for this game to come out for the PSP than now. Its popularity is about to pick back up with a release on Xbox Live Arcade during 2007, and the classic PlayStation game is still heralded as a must-play to this day. A new release would be ideal, perhaps in the form of a remix with the two additional levels that were previously only available in the Sega Saturn game release from years ago. Hell, for that matter, let's add another playable character, Trevor Belmont, right from the start. C'mon, Konami- give PSP owners some Castlevania loving.
Klonoa: Door To Phantomile (Namco)- Namco's classic platformer is sought after feverishly by the PlayStation elite, and for good reason- it's a terrific game. Players take control of a young cat-kid with a magical bracelet that can pick up enemies and launch them like they're balloons. The game works in a 2.5-D fashion, with 3-D graphics blended in with 2-D gameplay. This is an ideal format for the Sony PSP, as more side-scrollers would really do wonders for this little machine. Namco can even go as far as to do a Klonoa Greatest Hits release, with levels mixed from the first PlayStation game and Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil for the PlayStation 2. If Namco's wise, they'll pick up on this idea and give Klonoa another chance.
R-Type Delta (Agetec/Irem)- This 2.5-D shooter is probably amongst the best that Irem's ever made, feeling every bit like a classic R-Type game while also having the kind of visuals that really bring it to explosive life. Players control a space vessel through dangerous territory, blasting bits and pieces of the Bydo Empire while struggling for their own survival. The reason this game would be perfect for the PSP is with its nostalgic value. Yeah, the R-Type saga already came to a close with R-Type Final for the PS2, but this still stands as a strong entry in the series. It wouldn't hurt for Agetec to give it another chance on the PSP, and give people the opportunity to pick it up without spending $40+ on a copy on Ebay.
Final Fantasy Chronicles: Chrono Trigger (Square Enix)- Know what the PSP could really use right now? An old-fashioned RPG from Squeenix's classic library. What could be more classic than the original SNES favorite that started it all and found a new life in the Chronicles collection? Chrono Trigger is an ideal RPG experience, tripping all over the time rift with a number of memorable characters and massive battles. Of course, nothing's wrong with having any of the classic Final Fantasy games either. But there's something about the likes of Trigger, as well as Secret of Mana, that gains a more widespread appeal, instead of just to the hardcore audience. Hopefully, Squeenix will see what kind of open window of opportunity they have here.
