Mega Man 2 - 1992 - Game Boy

Mega Man 3 - 1992 - Game Boy

Mega Man 4 - 1993 - Game Boy

Mega Man 5 - 1994 - Game Boy

The original Mega Man series debuted on the Game Boy in 1990, and carried over the same gameplay elements from Mega Man on home consoles. Each game contained eight Robot Masters, which were in fact duplicates of the ones within the NES series. A single new foe was introduced in each release as well, who were often named for genres of music. Enemies such as Enker, named after traditional Japanese enka music; Punk, obviously named for punk rock; and Ballade, named after, well, ballads; were all introduced among other new faces.

The entire classic Mega Man series on Game Boy brought forth little innovation until its later releases. Mega Man 4 introduces a shop system where players can buy items for the first time, and Mega Man 5 makes the largest leaps, with a final enemy that for the first time, wasn't the much played-out Dr. Wily.

Mega Gets Xtreme

Mega Man Xtreme - 2001 - Game Boy

Mega Man Xtreme 2 - 2001 - Game Boy

Just as the classic Mega Man series was an extension of what was being released on home consoles at the time, Mega Man Xtreme was the portable equivalent of the Mega Man X franchise. While the first title took almost six years from the release of Mega Man X to find its way to the Game Boy Color, this ended a drought that had been plaguing portable Mega Man releases for some time.

Apart from a single release on the Sega Game Gear, and some minimal support on the NeoGeo Pocket Color, the Xtreme series was Mega Man's first foray into portable gaming with some color. All of the gameplay elements were carried over from X, so naturally players could finally upgrade themselves using the many suit pieces found throughout the stages. Within the first Xtreme game players found items that would summon the fan favorite Zero for special attacks, and in the second Zero is an additional playable character.
