Rather than dedicate an internal development team to the job they hired an experienced company named Camelot Software Planning, who had previously created the game Hot Shots Golf on the Playstation.
Instead of being a straight-up golf game, Camelot introduced a range of RPG stylings, like character building through experience, and limited adventuring around the golf grounds. There is a nice selection of differing modes of play; match play, stroke play, tournament and Marion (the name of the golf club) which is the main RPG style mode where you walk around the clubhouse and chat to the other characters. The link to Mario in this game is really limited to the fact there are characters and places from around the Mario universe in it. The first playable characters of the game are called Kid, Azalea, Joe and Sherry, with others becoming available as you progress. Other unlockables include such things as additional courses to play on and extra challenges.
