The GBA's Last Stand

Think the GBA is dead? Think again. We take a look at 11 stylish GBA titles, all due out in 2006. Get that rumble pak out of your DS's GBA slot!

...Continued From Page 1 Mega Man Battle Network 6: Cybeast Falzar & Cybeast Gregar
Release: June 13

Ok, Ok, we know. The sixth battle network game? There's a couple reasons you shouldn't let that big fat "6" allow the game to slip under your radar, however. First off, Capcom insists that this is the climax of the Battle Network storyline, so if you've never played them, or used to but then lapsed, this is the perfect place to hop in. The second is that the Battle Network games have remained consistently high quality, despite their extreme number of rapid sequels. Action RPG fans should take note!

Scurge: Hive
Release: June

Scurge: Hive is one of those games that has been around forever, and most people looking forward to it had finally given up hope as release date after release date came and went. We were hesitant to include it on our list since apparently GBA and DS versions are now slated, but its been the perennial "sweet GBA game" for too long for us to ignore. Scurge is a great-looking sci-fi action title with a semi-overhead viewpoint and 350 promised levels. Plenty of varied firepower is available, but it's all necessary to eradicate the 65+ enemy types the game includes.

Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 1 & 2
Release: June 27 & Q4

Another duo of GBA titles coming from Atlus. Although the games are RPGs, Swordcraft Story mixes up the formula by offering both an overhead and side viewpoint, and features a realtime combat system. Additionally, players can link GBA systems for multiplayer battling and item trading.

Juka and the Monophonic Menace
Release: June

Juka and the Monophonic Menace is another oft-delayed GBA release from Orbital, the company putting out Scurge: Hive. This one was first revealed over two years ago, however. We believe that Orbital means it with their summer release date this time, however. The Zelda-ish RPG gameplay focuses on Juka's ability to mix potions to gain special abilities. Orbital's first release, the excellent Racing Gears Advance, earns them the benefit of the doubt this time around. We have faith that the adventure won't just appeal to youngsters.

Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 1 & 2
Release: Summer & Fall

Atlus' third (and final) GBA duo is also arguably the most exciting. The franchise is over 15 years old in Japan and has been refined and distilled into a portable package that will be hard for RPG fans to pass up. The mech-centric experience focuses on customization, allowing for unique support techniques, and a wide variety of weapons. Atlus is promising over 40 hours of RPG goodness, but if the game includes even half that it will prove to be an excellent portable RPG value.

Metal Slug
Release: September

SNK's classic Metal Slug series returns to the GBA, but this time in port form. It's true that another new, original entry in the Metal Slug library might be more exciting, but have you really played Metal Slug 1 very much, or at all? Even if the answer is yes, the prospect of having the arcade classic always available on a tiny GBA cart is an attractive one. SNK has promised that the port will reach the GBA unchanged, with absolutely nothing added or removed.
