Modojo Awards: E3 2006

E3 2006 was the single great showing handheld gaming has ever had. Between the second wave of DS and PSP titles and mobile gaming finally maturing enough to take its rightful place with the big boys, there was a hell of a lot to see (and judge)...

Yoshi Island 2

To be honest, this choice surprised us nearly as much as it's (probably) surprising you. You'd be hard-pressed to find many serious gamers who aren't eagerly anticipating Yoshi Island 2, but when the votes were tallied and the game came out on top we were all a little shocked. While the E3 demo itself wasn't packed with originality or incredible graphics, the controls and early level design exhibited an uncharacteristically high amount of polish. It didn't feel like an E3 demo at all. It felt like the first few levels of another excellent addition to Nintendo's platformer library. Everyone on staff agreed that when we got Yoshi Island 2 in our hands E3's booming audio, flashing lights, and lines of people melted away. We were focused solely on swallowing shyguys, and then making (and launching) eggs. There's simply no better indicator of a game being worthy of such high praise.

Some of you might be asking yourselves where all the PSP games like Loco Roco or Gitaroo Man Lives! are on our list. Or how The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass could have not made the cut. The best answer we have to give you is that E3 is a big, big show, and we only had a select few awards to give out. We're sure the aforementioned titles will turn up on plenty of other publication's best-of lists, just as we're sure some of the titles we awarded will probably be snubbed everywhere else. Things would be pretty boring if everyone had the same opinion, right?
