Geneon Brings Anime to PSP

Geneon Entertainment announced that it will release two anime titles, Appleseed and Samurai Champloo, for the Sony PSP on July 5 across North America. By then both films will have already seen a DVD release, however Samurai Champloo's UMD iteration will sport a much more attractive $14.98 price tag (as opposed to its $23 DVD MSRP), while the Appleseed UMD will run a few cents cheaper than its DVD counterpart, priced at $19.95.

Neither of the UMDs will feature bonus material, though having seen previous successes with Japanese animation formatted for Sony's handheld, retailers are content that the movies will garner much attention.

"They are very strong bedfellows," says Chris Anstey, Virgin Entertainment Group Product Manager, commenting on the relationship between the anime and gaming consumer groups. "[Anime] has a distinct fan base. PSP does seem like a natural fit for those aficionados."

Geneon's plans for the rest of 2005 include DVD releases of Hellsing Ultimate OVA Series, Ghost Talker's Daydream, Petit Cossette, and Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo; all titles which were previously only available in Japan. Whether or not these releases might make their way onto UMD format is currently unspecified.
